Gaming PC Lost Video After BIOS Update — PCIe Riser Diagnosis

Customer-reported symptoms

  • Customer stated that the computer stopped producing video after completing a BIOS update. The BIOS update appeared to finish successfully and the customer selected Restart, but after rebooting the system no longer displayed video and the motherboard VGA diagnostic light remained illuminated. The computer was also reported to have no usable Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection. Ticket # 6679

Initial observations

  • Computer powered on but produced no usable video output with the RTX 3070 Ti connected through the PCIe riser cable. The motherboard VGA diagnostic light remained illuminated. The system was also unable to establish normal Internet connectivity through Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • The no-video condition began immediately after the BIOS update and restart. Each startup with the graphics card connected through the PCIe riser resulted in no usable video output and the motherboard VGA diagnostic light.
  • The customer updated the motherboard BIOS. The update completed and the computer prompted for a restart. After restarting, the system no longer produced video.
  • The computer was powered on in the customer's original configuration with the graphics card connected through the PCIe riser cable. The system failed to produce video and the motherboard VGA diagnostic light remained on.
  • Initial condition: no video through the PCIe riser configuration and motherboard VGA diagnostic light illuminated. Windows network logs also showed repeated Intel I225-V Ethernet link-disconnected events and repeated Wi-Fi limited-connectivity recovery attempts.

Diagnosis

Tests performed: GPU stress test, Power monitoring, Driver update/reinstallation, Network testing, Other, BIOS inspection. The RTX 3070 Ti was disconnected from the PCIe riser cable and installed directly into the motherboard PCIe slot. With the riser bypassed, the computer immediately POSTed, produced video and booted normally into Windows. NVIDIA graphics drivers and Windows updates were installed. The graphics card was then subjected to extended FurMark stress testing. The system remained stable under approximately 100% GPU load for nearly two hours with no video loss, artifacting, overheating or system crash. Because the original GPU works normally when connected directly to the motherboard, testing isolated the original no-video condition to the PCIe riser configuration and/or PCIe link settings that changed following the BIOS update. Network testing also identified repeated Ethernet link-disconnected events and Wi-Fi limited-connectivity events. The Internet problem remains under separate diagnosis.

Actual cause

The RTX 3070 Ti graphics card is functioning properly. The no-video condition was isolated to the PCIe riser configuration and/or PCIe link-generation settings following the BIOS update. The computer operates normally when the graphics card is connected directly to the motherboard. A separate Internet connectivity problem remains. Windows recognizes the Intel I225-V Ethernet controller but repeatedly reports that the network link is disconnected. Wi-Fi also recorded repeated limited-connectivity recovery events. A failed graphics card was ruled out. The RTX 3070 Ti operated normally when connected directly to the motherboard and passed extended stress testing at 100% GPU load. GPU overheating was also ruled out. Windows boot failure and a failed C: filesystem were not indicated during testing.

Repair options presented

  • The RTX 3070 Ti graphics card was not replaced because extensive testing confirmed that it is functioning properly. The motherboard was not replaced. The PCIe riser cable has not been replaced at this stage because additional PCIe configuration/riser testing may still determine whether the cable itself requires replacement.

Repair performed

Removed the RTX 3070 Ti from the PCIe riser configuration and installed the graphics card directly into the motherboard PCIe slot. Restored normal video output and Windows startup. Installed current NVIDIA graphics drivers and Windows updates. Performed extended GPU stress testing and continued diagnosis of the Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity problems.

Outcome

Graphics/video operation is stable with the RTX 3070 Ti connected directly to the motherboard. The computer POSTs and boots normally and the GPU passed extended stress testing. The original no-video condition did not return during testing. Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity remain under diagnosis and must be resolved or documented before final release. Improved but further testing needed Original no-video condition has been isolated and corrected by bypassing the PCIe riser configuration. Graphics card testing passed successfully. Computer remains under diagnosis for the separate Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity problem.

Technician notes

This case demonstrates why a VGA diagnostic light does not automatically mean the graphics card has failed. The RTX 3070 Ti produced no video while connected through the PCIe riser after a BIOS update, but the same GPU immediately worked when installed directly into the motherboard. The card then sustained approximately 1 hour 52 minutes of FurMark testing at 100% GPU utilization with temperatures around 68°C and a 78°C hotspot without artifacting, video loss or system instability. The results ruled out the GPU and isolated the problem to the PCIe riser configuration and/or PCIe link settings that changed following the BIOS update. This prevented an unnecessary graphics card replacement.
