Initial observations
- Computer automatically attempted to power on when the AC power cord was connected, even without pressing the case power button. System lighting repeatedly cycled on and off approximately once per second. The computer would not successfully POST or produce usable video.
- Customer brought in a custom gaming computer that would not POST or produce usable video. When power was connected, the computer would automatically attempt to start without pressing the power button. System lighting repeatedly cycled on and off approximately once per second. Ticket # 6614
- No specific software event or change was confirmed as the cause. The computer arrived with a persistent no-POST and power-cycling condition.
- AC power was connected and the computer immediately attempted to start. The system repeatedly cycled on and off and failed to complete POST. The same condition continued during initial component isolation testing.
- System failed to POST in its original configuration. Power cycling occurred approximately once per second. Removing nonessential components and resetting the system did not initially change the behavior.
Diagnosis
Tests performed: Visual inspection, Complete disassembly, Known-good CPU, Known-good PSU, Known-good GPU, Known-good RAM, GPU stress test, CPU stress test, Temperature monitoring, BIOS inspection, Other. The motherboard was removed from the case and tested outside of the chassis to eliminate a case short or mounting issue. The system was stripped to the minimum hardware required for POST. SSD, Wi-Fi card and other nonessential components were removed, and CMOS/BIOS settings were reset. A known-good processor was installed for testing. The computer continued to exhibit the same no-POST and power-cycling behavior with the known-good CPU, ruling out the customer's processor as the primary cause. Because the failure remained with the motherboard outside of the case and with nonessential hardware removed, the motherboard was identified as the failed component. After motherboard replacement restored normal POST and startup, additional final testing revealed a separate cooling problem. The existing liquid CPU cooler was not operating properly. The cooling system was replaced and an additional rear exhaust fan was installed. Final temperature and stability testing was then completed.
Actual cause
Primary failure was the motherboard. Component isolation testing, including testing outside of the case and substitution of a known-good CPU, produced the same no-POST condition and ruled out the processor as the cause. After motherboard replacement restored normal operation, a second problem was discovered during final testing: the existing liquid CPU cooling system was not functioning properly and required replacement. The customer's CPU was ruled out as the cause because the exact same no-POST condition remained with a known-good processor installed. A case short was also ruled out because the motherboard produced the same failure while being tested outside of the chassis. SSD and Wi-Fi hardware were removed during isolation testing without changing the failure.
Repair options presented
- The CPU was not replaced because testing with a known-good processor produced the same original no-POST condition, confirming that the processor was not the primary failure. Other removable hardware that did not contribute to the fault was retained.
Repair performed
Replaced the failed motherboard with an ASUS PRIME B760M-A DDR5 motherboard. Reassembled and configured the custom gaming computer and restored normal POST and startup. During final testing, the liquid CPU cooler was found to be malfunctioning. The failed cooling system was replaced with a new dual-fan liquid CPU cooler, and a rear exhaust fan was installed to improve airflow. The system was then subjected to final temperature and stability testing.

Outcome
Computer now POSTs and boots normally. The original power-cycling/no-POST condition did not return. CPU cooling and system airflow are operating properly, and final stress testing completed without instability or overheating. Repaired and verified Failed motherboard was replaced and normal POST and startup were restored. A separate failed liquid CPU cooler was discovered during final testing and was also replaced. Final stress and temperature testing completed successfully.
Technician notes
This repair required more than simply replacing the first suspected component. The motherboard was removed from the case and tested with only the hardware required for POST. A known-good CPU produced the exact same failure as the customer's processor, ruling out the CPU and helping isolate the motherboard as the cause. After the motherboard was replaced, the computer successfully POSTed and booted normally. However, final testing uncovered a second problem: the liquid CPU cooler was not operating properly. The cooling system was replaced and a rear exhaust fan was added. Final temperature and stress testing then confirmed stable operation with CPU temperatures remaining below approximately 80°C. This case demonstrates the importance of continuing to test a computer after the original fault has been repaired. Restoring POST solved the customer's primary complaint, but final verification identified a separate cooling failure before the computer was returned.
