Short answer
If the machine still uses a spinning hard drive, that is almost certainly the answer, and an SSD changes it more than anything else you could buy. Otherwise, look at free space, memory pressure and what is running at startup.
The four causes we see most
- A mechanical hard drive in a machine running a modern operating system — the single biggest cause.
- A nearly full drive, which leaves the system no room to work.
- Not enough memory for how the machine is actually used, especially with many browser tabs open.
- Background software: multiple security tools, updaters, sync clients and leftovers from old installs.
Overheating and malware also cause slowdowns, but they usually come with other clues — loud fans and thermal shutdowns in one case, popups and browser changes in the other.
How to tell which one it is

Open Task Manager and watch the Performance tab
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. If the disk sits pinned at 100% while everything crawls, storage is your bottleneck.

Check the drive type
In Task Manager's Performance tab, each disk is labelled HDD or SSD. An HDD as the main drive explains most complaints on its own.

Check free space
Less than roughly 10–15% free on the system drive will slow a machine noticeably.

Check memory pressure
If memory sits near capacity during normal use, more RAM will help. If it doesn't, more RAM won't.

Review startup programs
The Startup tab lists what loads with Windows. Disable things you don't recognise or use — this is reversible.

Repair or replace?
An SSD and a memory upgrade will keep a lot of otherwise sound machines useful for years, and it costs far less than a new computer. Where it stops making sense is when the machine can't run a supported operating system, the battery and screen are also failing, or the parts required cost more than the machine is worth. We'll tell you which side of that line yours falls on.
When to bring it in
If the machine is slow and also freezing, throwing errors or making noise, treat it as a possible hardware fault rather than a tune-up. Bring it to the counter at our Bellevue shop and we'll look at it with you.
