Slow down and check who really sent the message, what it asks you to do, and where its links go. A familiar logo or name does not prove an email is real.

Scam emails often copy the colors and wording of a bank, store, delivery company, or Microsoft. The safest test is whether the request makes sense and whether the message came through the service's normal website or app.

Read the request
Urgency, threats, surprise refunds, gift-card requests, and demands for a password are warning signs. Real companies do not ask for your password by email.

Check the sender
Select the sender name to see the full address. A name that looks familiar can hide an unrelated address or a misspelled domain.

Preview the link
On a computer, place the pointer over the link without clicking. On a phone, press and hold carefully. If the address is strange, do not open it.

Verify another way
Open the company website yourself or call a number from a bill or card. Do not use the phone number or link in the suspicious message.
What not to do
- Do not click Unsubscribe on obvious junk; mark it as spam instead.
- Do not open unexpected attachments, even when the sender name looks familiar.
- Do not send a code, password, Social Security number, or card number by reply.
When to get help
If you clicked a link or opened an attachment, stop entering information and change any password you typed. If the computer now shows popups or behaves strangely, use the existing fake virus warning guide rather than following the popup.
