New Graphics Card Installed But No Display

You installed a new graphics card and the monitor stays black. Work through power connectors, seating, display inputs and BIOS settings in the right order.

Short answer

In most cases the card is fine. The usual causes are a missing PCIe power cable, a card that isn't fully seated, the monitor plugged into the motherboard instead of the card, or a power supply that can't carry the new load.

Why this happens

  • The monitor cable is still in the motherboard's video port instead of the graphics card.
  • One or both PCIe power connectors are missing, half-seated, or daisy-chained on a supply that can't handle it.
  • The card is not fully clicked into the PCIe slot — a very common miss on cases with tight rear brackets.
  • The power supply is under-rated for the card's transient load, so the system trips instead of posting.
  • Onboard graphics is still forced as the primary display in BIOS.
  • The card needs a BIOS update on older boards (Resizable BAR and above-4G decoding on some platforms).

Before you work inside the case

Step-by-step checks

  1. 1

    Move the monitor cable to the card

    Use the ports on the graphics card itself, low on the back of the case. Confirm the monitor's input source matches the cable you used.

    Reseat the card

    Release the PCIe latch, remove the card and press it back in until the latch clicks on its own. Then re-fit the bracket screws.

    Check the PCIe power cables

    Fit every connector the card asks for, using separate cables from the power supply where possible rather than one daisy-chained cable with two ends.

    Test with onboard graphics

    If your CPU has integrated graphics, remove the card, boot on the motherboard's port and confirm the system posts normally. That tells you the rest of the machine is healthy.

    Check BIOS display settings

    From that working boot, set primary display to PCIe/auto and enable above-4G decoding if the option exists. Update the motherboard BIOS if the card is much newer than the board.

    Try the card in a second slot

    If the board has another full-length PCIe slot, try it there. A dead primary slot is uncommon but it happens.

When to stop

Stop if you smell anything hot, if the board shows a stuck debug LED after every step, or if the next move would be buying a power supply purely on a hunch. At that point you are spending money to test a theory, and testing is exactly what a bench with known-good parts is for.

When to bring it in

We test gaming machines against known-good cards and supplies and then run them under real load, because a build that posts on the desk and dies in-game has not actually been fixed. Custom builds and upgrade jobs are a large share of what comes across our bench in Bellevue.

Common questions

How do I know if my power supply is big enough?
Look at the card's recommended system wattage and the age of the supply. An older unit at its rated limit often can't handle modern transient spikes even when the numbers look fine on paper.
