Short answer
Fans spinning only proves the power supply started. The machine may not be completing POST at all. Separate a monitor or cable problem from a machine that never gets far enough to output an image.
Two different problems that look the same
A black screen with the machine running means one of two things: the computer is working but the image is not reaching the monitor, or the computer never got far enough to produce an image. Everything else follows from which of those it is.
- Signs the machine is running: keyboard lights respond, Caps Lock toggles, you hear the Windows startup sound, the drive activity light flickers in a pattern rather than sitting still.
- Signs it never started properly: no keyboard response at all, fans running at a constant high speed, motherboard diagnostic LEDs lit on CPU, DRAM, VGA or BOOT.
Check the display path first

Use the graphics card's ports, not the motherboard's
On a machine with a dedicated card, the motherboard video ports are usually inactive. This is the single most common cause we see.

Select the right monitor input
Monitors do not always auto-switch. Cycle inputs manually and confirm the monitor shows its own on-screen menu — if the menu appears, the monitor itself is alive.

Swap the cable, then the port
Try a different DisplayPort or HDMI cable, and a different port on the card. Adapters and long cheap cables fail more often than cards do.

Try a different display
A second monitor or a TV rules the panel in or out in a minute.
Read what the motherboard is telling you
Most modern boards have either a two-digit POST code display or four small status LEDs labelled CPU, DRAM, VGA and BOOT. During a normal start they light in sequence and go out. One that stays lit tells you where the machine stopped.

Safe checks inside the case

Reseat the graphics card
Release the slot clip, remove the card, and refit it until it clicks. Cards work loose during transport and under their own weight.

Confirm every PCIe power cable
All required connectors must be fully home. On 12V-2x6 / 12VHPWR cards, check the plug is seated flat and square — a partly inserted plug is both a no-display cause and a fire risk.

Reseat memory one stick at a time
Try a single stick in the slot your manual specifies, then test the other stick alone. A machine that posts with one stick and not the other has told you something useful.

Clear CMOS
With the machine unplugged, use the board's clear-CMOS button or jumper. This undoes a bad overclock or memory profile that stops the board from posting.

Test onboard video if the CPU supports it
Remove the card and connect to the motherboard port. If you get an image, attention moves to the card, its slot or its power.
What each result may indicate
- Image on onboard video only — the card, the PCIe slot or its power, in that rough order of likelihood.
- Posts with one memory stick but not the other — a memory or slot fault, worth confirming by swapping slots before buying anything.
- Nothing changes with any combination — CPU, motherboard or power supply, which needs bench substitution to separate.
- Image appears after clearing CMOS — firmware settings were the cause; reapply changes one at a time.
- Monitor menu appears but no signal from any source — the monitor is fine and the machine is not sending an image.
When to stop
Stop when you have exhausted cables, monitors, memory positions and a CMOS clear and the screen is still black. What remains — CPU, motherboard, power supply, graphics card — can only be separated with known-good replacements, and buying those one at a time gets expensive quickly.

Common questions
- The fans spin, so the power supply must be fine, right?
- No. Spinning fans only prove the supply started. It can still fail to deliver stable power on the rails the CPU or graphics card need.
- Do I need to reinstall Windows if I get no display?
- No, and you should not. A black screen at startup is a hardware or display-path issue; reinstalling risks your data and fixes nothing here.
