Short answer
The fan is responding to something. Usually it is genuine CPU load from software you didn't notice, and sometimes it is a cooling system that can no longer keep up. Start in Task Manager, not with a screwdriver.
A loud fan is not automatically an overheating laptop
This is the single most useful thing to understand about the symptom. The fan speeds up when the firmware sees temperature or load rising — and the most common reason for both is that the processor is genuinely busy. A fan running hard while Windows installs updates, indexes files or runs a background scan is the cooling system working correctly.
- Fan loud, machine responsive, temperatures within spec — software load, cooling coping.
- Fan loud, performance dropping, chassis very hot — this has crossed into an actual thermal problem.
- Fan loud at idle with nothing running — either a stuck background process or the cooling system struggling to shed even light load.
- Fan noisy in a mechanical way — rattling, grinding, ticking — that is the fan hardware, regardless of temperature.
Start with what the machine is doing

Open Task Manager
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then the Processes tab, then click the CPU column to sort. Watch for a minute — a process holding 20 percent or more while you are idle is your answer.

Look for the usual suspects
Windows Update, antivirus scans, search indexing, cloud sync clients, browser tabs playing video or running heavy scripts, and game launchers updating in the background.

Check for a stuck update
An update that has failed and is retrying in a loop can hold the processor busy for hours. Restart the machine and let it settle for ten minutes before judging.

Close the browser entirely
Not just the window — check the fan behaviour with the browser fully closed. A single misbehaving tab can drive a fan all day.

Rule out unwanted software
Adware, cryptominers and other junk deliberately run the processor hard. If CPU usage is high but nothing recognisable is responsible, that needs looking at.

Check your power mode
Windows performance modes hold clock speeds higher and generate more heat. Balanced is quieter and, for everyday work, barely slower.
When it is the cooling hardware
If the processor is genuinely idle and the fan still runs hard, the cooling system is having to work harder than it should — or the fan itself is failing.

A BIOS or firmware update from the manufacturer sometimes changes fan behaviour for the better, particularly on models with a known noisy curve. That is worth checking on the manufacturer's support page for your exact model before assuming hardware.
Getting it sorted
If software is clean and the fan is still working overtime, the fix is usually a proper cooling service — opening the machine, clearing the fin stack, replacing the fan if the bearing has gone, and renewing the thermal compound. Common questions
- Is it bad if my laptop fan runs all the time?
- Not necessarily. If the machine performs normally and stays within its rated temperatures, a busy fan is the cooling system doing its job. It becomes a problem when performance drops or the chassis gets very hot.
- Why does the fan run hard when I'm doing nothing?
- Something is usually running that you can't see — updates, indexing, antivirus scans or a browser tab. Task Manager will show it. If nothing is running, the cooling system is likely restricted.
- Can I turn the fan off or slow it down?
- Some manufacturers provide fan modes in their own utility, which is fine. Forcing a fan slower with third-party tools risks letting the machine run hotter than intended.
- The fan makes a grinding noise. Does it need replacing?
- Mechanical noise that changes with fan speed usually means the bearing is worn or something is fouling the blades. That is a hardware repair, and worth doing before it seizes entirely.
