Laptop Overheating: Warm Is Normal, Hot Is Not

A laptop that gets uncomfortably hot, throttles, or shuts down usually has blocked vents, a clogged heatsink, a failing fan or aged thermal paste. Here is how to tell which.

Short answer

Every laptop gets warm — the whole cooling system is a fan and a heatpipe crammed into a few millimetres. Overheating is different: performance collapses, the chassis becomes too hot to rest on, or the machine shuts itself off to protect the hardware.

Telling warm apart from overheating

A thin laptop running a video call, a browser with thirty tabs and a Windows update in the background will get warm and the fan will be audible. That is the cooling system doing exactly what it was built to do. What matters is whether the machine can hold its performance.

The usual causes, in order of how often we see them

  • Blocked vents — using the laptop on a bed, sofa, cushion or duvet closes off the intake underneath within seconds.
  • A clogged heatsink — dust, hair and lint compress into a solid mat at the fin stack where the air exits. This is by far the most common cause on a machine more than two years old.
  • A failing or slow fan — bearings wear, the fan whines, ticks, or spins slower than it should while the software still reports it as running.
  • Aged thermal paste — the compound between the chip and the heatpipe dries out and stops transferring heat properly.
  • Genuine heavy workloads — gaming, video editing, CAD or virtual machines on a machine that was designed for office work.
  • Runaway background processes — a stuck update, a misbehaving browser tab or malware pinning the CPU at 100 percent produces the same heat as real work.
  • Environment — direct sun, a hot room, or a hard case that wraps the underside.
  • A swollen battery — the pack expands, presses on the chassis and changes the internal airflow. This one needs handling straight away.

What you can safely do yourself

    Put it on a hard, flat surface

    A desk or a board. Soft surfaces block the underside intake entirely and account for a surprising share of 'overheating' laptops.

    Look into the exhaust vent

    With a torch, look at the fins where air leaves. A grey felt across them means the heatsink is clogged and airflow has nowhere to go.

    Feel the exhaust while it works

    Load the machine for a couple of minutes and put your hand near the vent. Hot air moving is good. A hot laptop with almost no airflow means the fan or the fin stack is the problem.

    Open Task Manager

    Ctrl+Shift+Esc, sort by CPU. If something is holding high usage while you are doing nothing, the heat is a symptom of the software, not the cooling.

    Blow out the vents gently

    Short bursts of compressed air into the exhaust with the machine off and unplugged. This clears loose dust; it will not shift a fully compacted heatsink, which needs the machine opened.

    Check Windows power settings

    A balanced power mode instead of maximum performance meaningfully lowers temperatures on many laptops with very little practical cost.

    Test with a cooler workload

    If it stays cool browsing but overheats in games, the cooling may simply be at the limit of what that chassis was designed for.

When it needs opening up

Properly clearing a laptop cooling system means removing the base, taking the heatsink assembly off, clearing the fin stack, servicing or replacing the fan and applying fresh thermal compound. Laptop bases use hidden clips and ribbon cables that break easily, and heatsink screws have to go back in the marked sequence to seat evenly. It is routine work on a bench and an expensive afternoon at a kitchen table.

Common questions

Is it bad that my laptop is hot underneath?
Warm underneath during heavy work is normal. Too hot to keep on your lap, combined with performance dropping or shutdowns, is not — that is worth investigating.
How often should a laptop be cleaned internally?
Every one to two years for most machines. Homes with pets, carpet or smokers clog heatsinks considerably faster.
Will a cooling pad fix overheating?
It can drop temperatures a few degrees and helps if the machine is otherwise healthy. It won't fix a blocked heatsink, a failing fan or dried-out thermal paste.
Can overheating be caused by malware?
Indirectly, yes. Anything pinning the processor at full load produces full-load heat. Check Task Manager before assuming the cooling has failed.
