Short answer
Start with power. A charger that has failed, a battery that has gone completely flat, or a port that no longer makes contact accounts for most laptops that arrive at our bench "dead". The rest is internal and needs a proper look.
"Nothing happens" can mean several things
Before anything else, work out which of these you have. They point in completely different directions.

Safe checks, in order

Check the wall outlet
Plug a lamp or a phone charger into the same socket. Power strips and surge protectors fail more often than people expect.

Look at the charger's light
Most chargers have a small light on the brick. No light usually means the charger has failed — a very common and inexpensive fix.

Feel the charger brick
It should be slightly warm when plugged in. Stone cold with nothing plugged in at the laptop end can be normal; stone cold while connected to a flat laptop is not a good sign.

Check the plug at the laptop end
Wiggle it gently. If the light flickers, or the connector feels loose or wobbly, the charge port may be damaged — that's a bench repair, not a cable problem.

Charge for at least 30 minutes, then try
A battery that's been fully drained for weeks may need time before it will allow a start at all.

Hold the power button for 30 seconds
With the charger unplugged, hold it down, then plug the charger back in and try again. This clears a stuck power state and genuinely revives some machines.

Try without any accessories
Unplug USB devices, external monitors, docks and SD cards, then try again. A faulty accessory can stop a laptop starting.
What not to do
- Don't use a charger from a different laptop unless you know it's the right voltage and connector. The wrong one can damage the board.
- Don't force a connector that doesn't fit properly.
- Don't keep tapping the power button repeatedly.
- Don't take the machine apart to "check the battery" if you haven't done it before — laptop internals are tight and ribbon cables tear easily.
- Don't buy a replacement battery on a guess. If the charger is the fault, a new battery changes nothing.
What we usually find
- Failed charger — the single most common cause, and the cheapest.
- Damaged charge port — the socket takes the weight of the cable for years and eventually loses contact or breaks free of the board.
- Battery at end of life — some laptops won't start on charger alone once the battery has failed completely.
- Liquid damage — even a small spill months ago can corrode a power circuit slowly until it stops.
- Motherboard or power circuit fault — the least common, and the one where repair-versus-replace really matters.

Is it worth repairing?
A charger or a charge port on a laptop you like is almost always worth fixing. A motherboard fault on a budget laptop that's six years old usually isn't, and we'll tell you that instead of selling you a repair. What we won't do is guess — a diagnosis first means you're deciding with real information.

Common questions
- How do I know if it's the charger or the laptop?
- If the charger has no light and the laptop shows no response at all, the charger is the first suspect. Borrowing a known-good charger of the correct type settles it quickly, and we test chargers as part of a diagnosis.
- My laptop only works when the charger is plugged in. Is that bad?
- It means the battery is no longer holding a charge. The laptop is usable that way, but a sudden power cut becomes a hard shutdown, so a battery replacement is worth pricing.
- The laptop is warm but the screen is black. Is it on?

- Can a spill from months ago cause this?
- Yes. Corrosion works slowly. A machine that seemed fine after a spill can fail weeks or months later, and the damage pattern usually makes the cause obvious once it's open.
- Can you get my files off if it can't be fixed?
- In most cases, yes. The drive is normally undamaged by a power fault, and recovering files from it is a separate, straightforward job.
