Short answer
Recovery is frequently possible, and nobody can promise it. The chances depend on the failure type and, heavily, on how much the drive is used after the trouble starts. The safest thing you can do with a suspect drive is stop using it.
Before anything else: stop using the drive
- Do not keep restarting to see if it works this time.
- Do not format the drive, even if Windows offers to.
- Do not reinstall Windows or run a factory reset — that writes over the exact area your files live in.
- Do not run chkdsk /f or repair tools on a drive making noise; repair tools write to the disk.
- Do not save new files or install recovery software onto the affected drive.
- Do not open the drive. The platters need a clean environment; a kitchen table ends the job.
- Do not put a drive in the freezer. It is old advice and it does damage.

Decide how much the data is worth
Answer this before touching anything. If the files are irreplaceable, the cheapest thing you can do is stop and let someone image the drive.

Listen to the drive
Rhythmic clicking, beeping or scraping means mechanical trouble. Power off immediately — DIY software cannot help and every attempt risks the platters.

Check SMART data — once
If the drive still mounts, read its SMART status. Reallocated or pending sectors, or a failing self-assessment, mean copy your data off now and replace the drive.

Copy the most important files first, once
If the drive is readable, copy your irreplaceable files to another drive before anything else — not the whole disk, not the operating system. One pass, most important first.

Disk repair tools are for healthy drives with file system errors, not for hardware that is failing.
What each result may indicate
- Drive mounts and copies files normally — you have time, but treat it as borrowed time and replace the drive.
- Copying starts then stalls at certain files — the media is degrading in places; stop repeated attempts and get it imaged properly.
- Drive appears in BIOS but not in Windows — often a file system or partition issue, which is frequently recoverable.
- Drive not detected anywhere — electronics or mechanics, and not something to test repeatedly.
- Clicking with no detection — stop. Every additional spin-up risks further damage.
When to stop DIY
Stop the moment the drive makes an unusual noise, is not detected, or the data is genuinely irreplaceable. Consumer recovery software works by reading the drive repeatedly, which is precisely the wrong thing to do to failing hardware — and it cannot address a mechanical fault at all.

The first step is assessment: what is the drive doing, and is it safe to power up. Where it is, the priority is imaging — taking a copy of the drive so that all further work happens on the copy, not on the failing hardware. Recovery is then attempted from that image.

Once your files are safe, set up something that means you never repeat this: a copy on an external drive plus a copy in cloud storage. Drives are consumable parts and all of them eventually stop. A backup is the difference between an inconvenience and a loss.
