Short answer
An SSD has no moving parts, so it gives none of the audible warnings a mechanical drive does. It fails through behaviour instead: files that won't open, a drive that vanishes and comes back, long freezes, or a system that suddenly won't boot. Treat any of those as a backup emergency.
SSDs fail quietly
People wait for a noise. With a mechanical drive that instinct is reasonable — clicking, grinding and spin-up failures are genuine warnings. An SSD has nothing to click. It can go from apparently fine to completely unreadable inside a day, and quite often the only warning was a handful of odd behaviours that were easy to blame on Windows.
The signs that matter

| Drive missing from BIOS entirely | Controller failure. At this point it is a recovery question, not a repair question. |
Any one of these on its own can have other explanations. Two or more together, on the same machine, point strongly at storage.
Checking the drive's health

Read the SMART data
A free drive health utility will show manufacturer-reported health, power-on hours and total data written. Most give a plain Good / Caution / Bad style verdict, and Caution should be treated as a warning, not a curiosity.

Check the manufacturer's own tool
Samsung, Crucial, Western Digital, Kingston and others publish utilities that report health and firmware status for their own drives more accurately than generic tools.

Look at Event Viewer
Windows Logs, then System. Disk errors and controller warnings logged repeatedly are strong evidence, and they carry a timestamp you can match to the freezes.

Check for a firmware update
A small number of SSD models had firmware bugs causing exactly these symptoms, fixed by an update from the manufacturer. Worth checking your specific model.

Check the physical connection once
On a desktop, a loose SATA cable or a poorly seated M.2 drive can mimic failure. Check it once, with the machine off and unplugged — don't keep reseating it repeatedly.
What not to do with a suspect SSD
- Don't run repeated disk repair commands hoping it settles down.
- Don't format it to 'clean it up' while your files are still on it.
- Don't keep working on it day to day once health warnings appear.
- Don't assume a drive that came back after a reboot has recovered. Intermittent is a stage, not a state.
What happens next
If the drive is still readable, the job is straightforward: copy the data, fit a new drive and restore. If it has already dropped out entirely, this becomes a recovery question — and SSD recovery is a specialist, controller-level business with no guarantees, which is exactly why the warning signs above are worth acting on early.

Common questions
- How long do SSDs last?
- Most consumer SSDs comfortably outlast the endurance ratings ordinary use puts on them, and many machines are replaced before the drive wears out. That said, controller and electronic failures can happen at any age, which is why backups matter more than life expectancy.
- Does an SSD give warning before it fails?
- Sometimes — health data, read-only mode and file errors are real warnings. But SSDs can also fail suddenly and completely with nothing beforehand, which is a meaningful difference from mechanical drives.
- My SSD says health 90%. Should I replace it?
- Not on that figure alone. Health percentage largely reflects wear against a rated write endurance and a gradual decline is normal. What matters is a figure dropping quickly, reallocated blocks appearing, or symptoms alongside it.
- Can data be recovered from a dead SSD?
- Sometimes, and it depends entirely on how it failed. Controller failures are the hardest. Nobody can tell you the odds without examining the drive, and no honest shop will guarantee it.
