Windows 11 Stuck in an Automatic Repair Loop

Preparing Automatic Repair, then Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC, then round again. Here is what the loop is telling you and how to work through it without losing data.

Short answer

Automatic Repair is Windows noticing that boot failed and trying to fix itself. A loop means the repair isn't succeeding — which usually points at boot configuration, filesystem damage, a bad update or a drive that is failing.

What Automatic Repair actually is

When Windows fails to boot a couple of times in a row, it stops trying and hands control to the Windows Recovery Environment. You see 'Preparing Automatic Repair', then 'Diagnosing your PC', and then either it fixes the problem or it shows 'Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC'. From there it offers Advanced options or a shutdown.

A loop means the same failure happens each time and the automated repair cannot resolve it. That is a diagnostic signal, not a Windows bug — something specific is preventing boot and it is consistent.

What puts a machine into the loop

Two things to sort out before you touch anything

A sensible order to work through

    Disconnect everything unnecessary

    Remove USB drives, external disks, docks, printers and card readers, then restart. A machine trying to boot from an external device is a genuinely common cause and costs nothing to rule out.

    Choose Advanced options rather than shutting down

    From the Automatic Repair screen, take Advanced options, then Troubleshoot, then Advanced options again. That is where the useful tools live.

    Uninstall the most recent update

    If the loop began after Windows Update, Uninstall Updates is the highest-value non-destructive option and often ends it immediately.

    Try Startup Repair once more from here

    Running it deliberately from Advanced options sometimes succeeds where the automatic attempt did not. Let it complete.

    Try Safe Mode

    Startup Settings, Restart, then Safe Mode. Booting successfully into Safe Mode is good news: it points at a driver or software cause and gives you a route to copy files off and roll changes back.

    Use System Restore if available

    It rolls back system configuration and drivers without touching personal files, provided restore points exist.

    Check the drive is even seen

    If the BIOS or UEFI setup screen no longer lists the drive, or lists it intermittently, stop. That is a hardware problem and further software repair attempts are pointless and potentially harmful.

When the loop is really a hardware message

The pattern we see most often on the bench is a repair loop on a machine that had been quietly failing for weeks — occasional freezes, long pauses opening files, a Windows error here and there. Automatic Repair fails because the drive cannot reliably read the files the repair needs. Repeated repair attempts on a failing drive stress it further and can reduce what is recoverable.

  • Drive missing or intermittent in BIOS — hardware, stop software repair.
  • Repair attempts hang for hours — often a drive struggling to read.
  • Loud clicking on a mechanical drive — power it down and get it looked at before anything else.
  • Loop plus a history of freezes or corrupted files — assume storage until proven otherwise.

Common questions

How do I get out of the Automatic Repair loop?
Take Advanced options rather than shutting down, then work through uninstalling the latest update, Startup Repair, Safe Mode and System Restore. Disconnecting external drives before restarting is a quick first check.
Does Automatic Repair delete my files?
Automatic Repair itself does not. Reset This PC and a clean reinstall can, which is why they belong at the end of the list rather than the start.
Why does Startup Repair keep failing?
Either the fault is outside what it can fix — system file corruption, a bad driver, a hardware problem — or the drive cannot reliably read what the repair needs. Repeated failures on an older machine often mean the drive.
Is a repair loop always a sign the hard drive is dying?
No. Failed updates and boot configuration damage cause plenty of them on perfectly healthy drives. But storage is common enough that it should be checked before running repeated repair attempts.
