Short answer
Overheating is a cooling problem, not a mystery. The useful question is which part is hot, when it gets hot, and whether the cooling attached to it is actually doing its job. Temperatures alone don't diagnose anything until you know what the hardware is rated for.
What overheating actually means
A gaming PC is supposed to get warm. Modern CPUs and graphics cards are designed to run close to their limits when a game is loading them properly, and a card sitting in the 70s under load is often behaving exactly as intended. Overheating is when temperature stops the machine doing its job: frame rates dropping after a few minutes, clock speeds falling, fans screaming at full tilt, the case hot to the touch, or the system cutting out to protect itself.
- Performance is fine for the first few minutes, then drops — classic thermal throttling.
- Fans ramp to maximum and stay there in menus or on the desktop.
- Exhaust air is very hot, or the case panels are warm across the whole side.
- The machine cuts out mid-game and restarts, or shuts down entirely.
Work out which part is hot
Before touching anything, get numbers. A free monitoring utility will show CPU package temperature, GPU core temperature, fan speeds and clock speeds together. Run a game you already know causes the problem and watch what happens over ten to fifteen minutes. The shape of the graph tells you more than the peak.

Dust and airflow come first
Most of the overheating gaming machines that reach our bench in Bellevue are not broken. They are full of dust. A heatsink packed with a felt of dust and pet hair cannot move heat into the air no matter how fast the fan turns, and a card mounted horizontally collects it faster than anything else in the case.

Shut down and unplug
Power off fully, switch off at the wall and unplug the power lead before opening the side panel.

Look at the intakes and filters
Front, bottom and top filters clog first. A mat of dust across an intake starves the whole case of air.

Check the fin stacks
Look through the CPU heatsink and the graphics card cooler towards a light. If you cannot see gaps between the fins, that is your problem.

Clean with compressed air, gently
Short bursts from a can of compressed air, holding each fan blade still with a finger so it cannot be spun beyond its rated speed. Do this outdoors or over a bin.

Check where the machine sits
A PC pushed into a closed desk cubby, sat on carpet, or with its intake against a wall will recirculate its own hot exhaust. Give it a hand's width of clearance on every intake face.

Confirm fans actually spin
Power back on with the panel off and look. A case fan or a graphics card fan that has seized is easy to miss when the others are still running.
When the cooling hardware itself is the fault
If the machine is genuinely clean and still overheating, attention moves to the cooler doing its job at all.
- Liquid cooler pump failure — the radiator stays cool while the CPU spikes within seconds of load. A dead pump looks exactly like a catastrophic CPU fault to anyone reading temperatures alone.
- Heatsink contact — a cooler knocked loose during transport, or mounting pressure lost on one corner, will cool one side of the die and not the other.
- Thermal paste past its life — paste that has dried and cracked no longer bridges the gap. On a machine several years old this is routine maintenance, not a defect.
- Failing fan bearings — a fan that rattles, ticks, or only starts when nudged is on the way out even if it currently spins.
- Restrictive case layout — a high-wattage card in a case with one exhaust fan and no front intake is a design limit, not a fault.
Where to stop
Cleaning filters, blowing out dust and adjusting where the machine sits are safe for anyone. Removing a graphics card cooler, repasting a CPU or replacing an all-in-one liquid cooler is a different level of risk — mounting pressure, paste coverage and reconnecting fan headers all matter, and a card damaged during a teardown is an expensive mistake.
- Stop if the card is under warranty — removing the cooler usually voids it.
- Stop if you are not confident reseating a CPU cooler evenly.
- Stop if the machine shuts down before you can finish testing.
- Never open a power supply. There is nothing user-serviceable inside one.
When it is worth bringing in
A thermal problem is one of the more satisfying things to sort out on a bench, because it can be measured before and after. We clean the cooling path properly, check every fan and pump under load, replace thermal interface material where it has aged out, and re-test with the same game that was causing the trouble. Consultations at the counter are free, so you can describe what the machine is doing before committing to anything.
Common questions
- Is 80°C too hot for my graphics card?
- It depends entirely on the card. Many cards are rated to run in the 80s under sustained load and will throttle safely well above that. Check the manufacturer's published operating specification for your exact model rather than a general rule.
- Will more case fans fix overheating?
- Sometimes, but only if airflow is the limiting factor. If the heatsink is clogged or the cooler has lost contact, adding fans changes very little. Diagnose which component is hot first.
- How often should a gaming PC be cleaned out?
- Roughly once a year for most homes, more often with pets, carpet or smokers in the house. Machines that sit on the floor collect dust dramatically faster than ones on a desk.
- Can overheating permanently damage my hardware?
- Modern CPUs and GPUs throttle and then shut down to protect themselves, so sudden death from heat alone is uncommon. Sustained high temperatures over long periods do age components and stress cooling hardware, which is reason enough to fix it.
