Short answer
A gaming PC that crashes under load and behaves perfectly at idle is telling you something: the fault only appears when heat, current draw or memory pressure rises. Work through the load-related causes in order rather than replacing parts on a guess.
First, describe the crash precisely
"It crashes" covers at least five different failures, and each one points somewhere different. Before you change anything, work out which one you actually have.

Write down which games, how long into a session, and whether anything changed recently — a driver update, a new card, a Windows feature update, a room that got warmer. Timing is diagnostic information.
Causes that produce load-only crashes
- Graphics drivers — a bad install, leftovers from a previous card, or a specific driver branch that a game dislikes.
- Thermals — GPU or CPU reaching throttle or shutdown temperatures after several minutes under load.
- Memory — a marginal stick, a mismatched kit, or an XMP/EXPO profile the board cannot actually run stably.
- Power supply — an aging or undersized unit that cannot hold voltage during current spikes, which modern GPUs produce constantly.
- Unstable overclocks or undervolts, including factory-boosted cards and CPU boost behaviour left on automatic.
- Storage — a failing drive or a game installed on a disk with read errors.
- Windows itself — corrupted system files, conflicting overlays, or two anti-cheat and monitoring tools fighting each other.
- Motherboard and firmware — an outdated BIOS on a board running a CPU or memory kit released after it.

Log temperatures during a real session
Use a monitoring overlay and watch GPU and CPU temperatures while you play. Note the peak, and note whether the crash happens at that peak or at a random point.

Check Windows Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer
Search for "Reliability history". It gives you a timeline of crashes with the failing component or driver named. Event Viewer's System log will show Kernel-Power ID 41 for an unclean shutdown.

Clean-install the graphics driver
Remove the current driver properly, then install a current stable release rather than a beta. Do not layer a new driver over a half-broken one.

Turn off overclocks and memory profiles
Set XMP/EXPO to off and return any GPU or CPU tuning to stock. If stability returns, the profile was the problem — that is a real finding, not a failure.

Test memory
Run an extended memory test overnight. Any error at all means the memory configuration is not sound.

Verify the game and check storage health
Verify game files through the launcher, and check the drive's SMART status. Crashes confined to one game are more often files or shaders than hardware.

Reseat what you can reach safely
With the machine unplugged, confirm the PCIe power cables are fully clicked into the graphics card and the card sits flat in its slot.
What each result may indicate
- Stable at stock, crashing with XMP or an overclock — the memory kit, the board's memory training, or the tuning profile. Not automatically a defective stick.
- Crashes only in one title — game files, shaders or a driver interaction far more often than failing hardware.
- Crashes in every 3D load — a shared resource: GPU, power delivery, memory or thermals.
- Temperatures at 90 °C+ before every crash — thermals are involved, though a dying fan, dried paste, blocked filters or a case airflow problem all produce that.
- Memory test errors — stop testing other things and address memory first; unstable RAM can corrupt files while you troubleshoot.
- Kernel-Power 41 with no blue screen — usually power delivery or a protective cut, but a hardware fault can also bypass Windows logging.

When to stop DIY troubleshooting
Stop when the next step means buying a part to find out whether it was the problem. Guess-swapping a power supply, a memory kit and a graphics card in sequence costs more than a diagnosis and often leaves the original fault in place.
Stop immediately if you see artifacts on screen before a crash, smell anything hot, or find that the machine now crashes at the desktop as well. Those change the situation from tuning to hardware failure.
When professional diagnosis makes sense
Isolating a load-related fault takes known-good parts to test against — a proven power supply, a proven memory kit, a proven card. That is the difference between a bench and a living room: we substitute one variable at a time instead of buying our way through the parts list.

Common questions
- Can a power supply cause crashes even if the PC turns on fine?
- Yes. Starting a machine takes a fraction of the current a graphics card pulls mid-game. A supply that boots reliably can still drop out under load spikes.
- Does a single memory test error matter?
- It does. One error means the configuration is not stable, and unstable memory can quietly corrupt files. It does not automatically mean the stick is bad — the speed profile or the board can be the cause.
- Should I reinstall Windows to fix crashing?
- Not early on. A reinstall wipes your data and will not fix a thermal, memory or power fault. Rule out hardware first.
