Panel damage stays on the laptop's own screen. A graphics fault follows the machine onto an external monitor. That single distinction decides whether you are looking at a straightforward screen replacement or a board-level problem.
What the damage looks like

Note when the problem started and whether the machine was dropped, closed on something, or carried loose in a bag. Physical history matters more than anything else here.
Two tests that answer most of it

The external display test
Connect a monitor or TV. If the external picture is clean, the fault is in the panel, cable or lid assembly. If the same corruption appears externally, the graphics path is involved.

The BIOS test
Restart into the BIOS or firmware setup screen. Corruption there is happening before Windows and its drivers load, which points away from software.

The lid-movement test
Slowly open and close the lid with the machine on. Changes that track lid angle indicate the cable or its connector rather than the panel glass.

The temperature test
Note whether the image is clean from cold and degrades after ten or twenty minutes. Heat-dependent artifacts are a distinctive pattern.
What each result may indicate
- Clean external, damaged internal — a panel, cable or lid repair. Usually the more affordable outcome and often worth doing.
- Corrupted on both — graphics chip, its memory, or the shared display circuitry on the board. Board-level work, and worth an honest conversation about the value of the machine.
- Clean in BIOS, corrupted in Windows — driver or software first, which is the cheapest outcome of all.
- Corruption tied to lid angle — cable or connector, frequently accompanied by hinge damage that will keep breaking cables if it is not addressed.
- Clean when cold, artifacts when warm — a thermal fault. Cooling and paste may be involved, but so may the chip itself.

When to stop DIY
Stop before ordering a replacement panel from the model number alone. The same laptop model often ships with several panel variants — different resolutions, refresh rates, touch layers and connector types — and the wrong one does not work. Stop as well if the hinge is stiff, loose or lifting the case; replacing the panel without fixing the hinge means damaging the new one.

- Often yes, on a machine that is otherwise sound and current. It depends on the panel variant and the condition of the rest of the laptop, which is why we quote after checking rather than before.
- Can a graphics chip be replaced on a laptop?
- On most modern laptops the graphics is part of the processor package soldered to the board, so the practical options are board-level work or replacing the machine. We will say which applies to yours.
- Why do lines appear only sometimes?
- Intermittent lines usually mean a marginal connection — a cable, a connector, or a solder joint that changes with heat or movement.
