Short answer
There is no single correct amount. Memory should match your workload, and the most useful question is not how much you have but whether you are running out — which Task Manager will tell you in a couple of minutes.
A straight answer, by what you do

How to tell whether you're actually short

Open Task Manager and use the machine normally
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then the Performance tab, then Memory. Don't check it on a fresh boot — open everything you'd usually have running.

Look at the total in use
Sitting near capacity during ordinary work means you're memory limited. Sitting at half means memory is not your problem and adding more will change nothing.

Check committed memory
The 'Committed' figure showing well above your installed capacity means Windows is leaning on the page file — writing memory contents to disk because it has run out of physical RAM.

Watch disk activity when things slow down
Heavy disk usage at the exact moment the machine stutters, with memory near full, is the classic signature of memory pressure.

Note the slot and configuration information
The Memory panel also shows how many slots are used and how many exist. That tells you whether an upgrade means adding sticks or replacing them.
High memory usage is not itself a fault. Windows deliberately caches data in unused memory because idle RAM helps nobody. The signal to look for is memory near full combined with the machine slowing down and the disk working hard.
Practical limits before you buy anything
- Many thin laptops have memory soldered to the board and cannot be upgraded at all. This is worth checking before anything else.
- Some laptops have one soldered bank and one free slot, which limits your options and affects channel configuration.
- Every motherboard has a maximum supported capacity and supports specific memory types and speeds. Mixing mismatched sticks causes instability.
- Running two matched sticks in dual channel is usually better than one large stick, particularly on machines using integrated graphics.
- Desktops are generally straightforward; laptops vary enormously by model.
When more RAM is not the answer
RAM has a reputation as the universal fix for a slow computer, and it isn't one. Adding memory to a machine that has plenty spare changes nothing at all — we've had people arrive disappointed after buying sticks online for exactly that reason.

- Is 8 GB of RAM still enough?
- For email, browsing, streaming and light documents, yes. For heavy multitasking, lots of browser tabs, gaming or creative work, 16 GB is the more comfortable target.
- Will adding RAM speed up my computer?
- Only if you're running out of it. Check Task Manager during normal use — if memory sits near capacity while the machine struggles, more will help. If it's half empty, look elsewhere.
- Can I mix different RAM sticks?
- Sometimes it works, but mismatched capacity, speed or timings can cause instability and force everything to run at the slowest module's speed. Matched pairs are the reliable route.
- Can my laptop's RAM be upgraded?
