When it makes a dramatic difference
- The machine takes minutes to reach a usable desktop and the drive light stays solid.
- Programs take an age to open and the whole system stalls while they do.
- Task Manager shows disk usage pinned at or near 100 percent during normal work.
- The computer is unresponsive for the first few minutes after logging in.
- You can hear the drive working constantly.
- The processor and memory are adequate for what you actually do, but the machine still feels slow.
That last point is the crucial one. An SSD is worth fitting when the rest of the machine is fine — a reasonable processor, enough memory, healthy cooling. In that situation you get an old laptop or desktop back for a fraction of replacement cost, and it typically stays useful for several more years.
When an SSD won't fix your problem

SATA or NVMe, and what it means for you
There are two common SSD formats and the difference matters less than people expect.
- SATA SSD — uses the same connection as the old hard drive, available as a 2.5 inch drive that drops into almost any laptop or desktop. Dramatically faster than a mechanical drive.
- NVMe SSD — a small stick that fits an M.2 slot on the motherboard, and considerably faster than SATA on paper. Only an option if the machine has a suitable M.2 slot, which older systems don't.
Going from a hard drive to either type is the leap you feel. Going from SATA SSD to NVMe is measurable in benchmarks and largely invisible in everyday use, unless you regularly move very large files. If a machine only supports SATA, that is not a reason to skip the upgrade.
What the upgrade actually involves
The physical fitting is the easy part. The work is in moving your Windows installation, programs and files across so you sit down to the machine you recognise rather than an empty desktop. That means either cloning the existing drive — which needs the old drive to be readable and healthy — or a clean install with your data restored afterwards.

- Can I keep my old hard drive as extra storage?
- On a desktop, usually yes — run Windows from the SSD and use the old drive for files. On a laptop it depends on whether there's a second bay. If the old drive is failing, don't keep it.
- Will I lose my files and programs?
- Not if the drive is cloned or the data is properly migrated. A clean install means reinstalling programs, so it's worth agreeing which approach you want beforehand.
- Is it worth upgrading an old laptop, or should I replace it?
