What Is TeamViewer, and Is It Safe?

TeamViewer is legitimate remote-support software, but an unexpected caller using it can still steal access to accounts and files.

Short answer

TeamViewer can help a trusted technician support you, but never install it or share a code because of an unsolicited call, popup, or refund story.

What TeamViewer does

TeamViewer lets a remote person view or control a computer with your permission. The name may be legitimate while the person using it is not. The safest question is how the session started.

If someone already connected

  1. 1

    End the connection

Close TeamViewer and disconnect the computer from the internet if the person is still active.

  2. 2

    Use a trusted device

Change email, banking, and other important passwords from a different device. Contact your bank through a number you already trust if money was involved.

  3. 3

    Check access

Remove unattended access and note any programs or settings changed during the session.

  4. 4

    Get the computer checked

A cleanup should verify what happened rather than simply uninstalling one program. See remote-access scam steps.

What not to do

  • Do not call a number shown in a virus warning.
  • Do not share a TeamViewer ID or password with an unsolicited caller.
  • Do not assume deleting the icon proves the session caused no harm.

Common questions

Is TeamViewer malware?
TeamViewer is legitimate software. A scammer can misuse legitimate remote-access software, which is why the caller and circumstances matter.
Can a technician use TeamViewer safely?
Yes, when you start the session with a technician you trust, stay present, and end access when the work is complete.
