Short answer
Search the whole account before assuming messages are gone. Check Archive, Trash, Junk, filters, forwarding, and recent sign-ins from the provider's website.
What this usually means
Email apps do not always show the same folders. A swipe can archive a message, a filter can move it, and a second device can delete it. The web version is the best place to see the account's actual contents.
Safe things to try
- 1
Search all mail
Use the provider's search box with a sender name or subject. In Gmail, check All Mail; in Outlook, search the whole mailbox.
- 2
Check folders
Look in Archive, Deleted Items or Trash, Junk, and any custom folders. Also check Focused and Other in Outlook.
- 3
Review rules and filters
Open settings and look for a rule moving or deleting messages. Remove rules you did not create.
- 4
Check account activity
Look for unknown devices, forwarding addresses, or sign-ins. Change the password if anything is unfamiliar.
What not to do
- Do not empty Trash while you are still looking for messages.
- Do not install a cleanup program that promises to recover email.
- Do not assume missing mail means the entire account was hacked.
When to get help
If messages are missing from the provider's website too, ask the provider about recovery before the retention period ends. If only one app is missing them, repair the app after confirming the account is safe.
Common questions
- Does archived mean deleted?
- No. Archived messages are removed from the inbox but normally remain searchable in the account.
- Can a full mailbox hide new email?
- Yes. A full account may stop accepting new messages, so check storage when recent mail is missing.
